Owl Observatory
This is one of a series of bird-themed posters exploring travel, aviation and science, created for the 2023 Global Bird Fair.
And what better animal is there to represent the observation and exploration of space than an owl? With their distinctive ‘wise’ eyes, incredible binocular vision and their nocturnal nature, they’re instantly recognisable and inherently mysterious.
There’s over 200 species of owl, but for this I used the Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) as reference. Native to Europe and Asia, it’s one of the largest species of owl in the world, and can have wingspans of over 2 metres.
With no natural predators, they’re considered formidable ‘apex’ predators. They’re expert silent hunters, using their enormous orange eyes to easily locate prey at night.
They also have distinctive ‘ear tufts’ and a facial disk: a group of feathers that funnel and magnify sound to their ears, allowing them to detect noise made by the smallest prey.
